Relationship between Ocular Axial Length and Height in Port Harcourt City, Nigeria.

Abstract

Introduction: Axial length (AL) is defined as the  distance between the anterior and the posterior poles of the eye[1,2]. It is one of the  most important biometric parameters in the eye required for the calculation of intraocular lens power[3,4]. Several studies have been  carried out in various countries to determine axial length and the relationship between axial length and height[5,6,7]. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between Ocular axial length (AL) and height in a normal adult population, with a view to deriving  possible usable working formulae in estimating intraocular lens power for cataract surgeries in resourcechallenged settings

Methods: A community based descriptive cross  sectional study carried out on adults aged 18 years and above between the 6th of  January 2014 and 31st of March 2014 using multistage simple random sampling in 4 stages. Ethical clearance was obtained from the  University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital ethical committee. Inclusion criteria of Visual Acuity > 6/18, no history of past ocular  surgeries or trauma were used. Sample size was calculated using Sathian et al[8], formula for means with a 13% non-response rate.  466 individuals were randomly selected from 4 randomly selected communities out of 11 communities in Port Harcourt City LGA. The number of those selected in each community was determined using probability proportion to the size of each community. A team  comprising of the researcher, 2 second year ophthalmology residents, 2 ophthalmic technicians, 2 research assistants, an ophthalmic  nurse and a community guide administered to access sociodemographic data. Height was measured using a standard  height  utomated scale (SECA 769,220). Visual acuity and fundoscopy were done while axial length (AL) was measured using Amplitude (A)  scan ultrasonography (SONOMED PACSCAN 300AP). Data obtained from one eye of the subjects were analyzed using SPSS (Version  17). There was no financial support
