Vol. 2 No. 1 (2017): Transactions of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria

Editorial Comments

It is with great joy that we present the proceedings of the 42ndAnnual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN) in this second edition of the Transactions of Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria. The Conference took place between the 21st and 25th of August, 2017 at the beautiful city of Kaduna which brought together specialist and subspecialist ophthalmologists from various parts of Nigeria and also outside the country. The Conference provided opportunity for ophthalmologists at different levels of training to interact and share ideas with qualified ophthalmologists. The theme of the Conference was ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Eye Care Delivery in Nigeria’. Over 400 participants were present and various geopolitical zones of the country well  represented.

One of the major focus of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria is to develop evidenced  based researches locally in order to get proven Nigerian indices of local eye and eye related conditions. To that effect, the OSN has resolved to produce into a Journal the articles presented during the last conference of the society. The original research articles compiled in this volume represent the output of research work conducted by various ophthalmologists of different sub specialities from various public and private institutions in the country and also from colleagues outside of the country/ continent following careful peer review of the abstracts. The publications cover various subspecialties including Anterior Segment and Cataract, Neuro Ophthalmology, Retina and Vitreous, Glaucoma, Public Health, Ocular Inflammation, Paediatrics and Oculoplastics. It is believed that this procedure will make available body of knowledge generated by research (especially locally) which should translate to better approaches at managing ocular conditions at our various communities. Many of the articles presented here can comfortably be used as template for better patient management and further research by ophthalmologists and as a pool of ideas for implementation by policy makers.

The  contributions of the various groups and organizations that worked tirelessly in making this Journal a reality is well appreciated. Notable amongst which is the OSN Executives, the NJO crew and representatives of subspecialties. We have placed a minimal publication cost to the authors to help us offset the high cost of publication.

Thank you
